SEO and AI SEO: staying visible when the answer no longer has ten links.

AI assistants and AI overviews answer questions directly — and name only a few sources while doing it. Appearing there takes the classic SEO foundation and a few new disciplines on top.

Key points

01

Classic SEO stays the foundation — AI SEO does not replace it, it builds on it.

02

AI systems cite content that answers a question directly and can back it up.

03

Being unambiguous across every channel (name, place, service) is a ranking factor for machines and trust for people.

04

Local visibility — «in Zurich», «in Switzerland» — becomes more important in AI answers, not less.

Search has not become harder — it has become binary.

The classic results page had ten places; an AI answer names two or three sources — or none. That does not make the competition for visibility bigger, it makes it more binary: either what you offer is part of the answer, or for that query it does not exist.

Behaviour is shifting at the same time. Someone who used to search for «fiduciary Zurich» now asks an assistant which fiduciary suits an SME with 20 employees. The answer is assembled from sources that deal with that question concretely.

Without classic SEO, no machine reads you either.

Sound technology, fast loading times, a clear page structure, one main heading per page, meaningful meta data and internal links — none of it is new, and all of it stays a precondition. Content that Google cannot read cleanly will not be cited by a language model either.

Then there is technical accessibility: content that only becomes visible once scripts have run is invisible to many AI systems.

AI systems cite evidence — not self-description.

A question-and-answer structure rather than advertising copy: content that answers a concrete question directly gets picked up; self-description does not. Structured data makes products, prices, opening hours and FAQs machine-readable.

Being unambiguous works like evidence: company name, location and services have to read identically on the website, in the business listing and in directories. And substance beats volume — one well-evidenced page is cited sooner than twenty shallow ones.

Recommendations for practice

01

Put the classic foundation in order first — technology, structure, meta data.

02

Build your service pages as answer pages: one concrete question, one evidenced answer, one next step.

03

Maintain structured data and a complete, consistent business listing.

04

Write in your customers' everyday language, not in your own technical vocabulary.

05

Measure mentions as well as clicks: does your name appear in AI answers on your core topics?
